Breaking The Silence

A documentary production by Rowan University students under the leadership of Producers, Corry Jean and James Dowd, during the spring 2002 semester. The documentary runs approximately 20 minutes.

Synopsis:

The incidence of acquaintance rape among college women is at an all-time high. Nine out of ten college rape victims knew their attacker. Men need to be educated about what constitutes rape, but most importantly they need to understand and empathize with a potential victim's point-of-view concerning the emotional pain of rape.

The crew spent time with campus sexual assault victims and a man with a mission. This is their story.

The documentary can be used in high school and college settings to educate men and women on sexual assault and how to prevent it. It will also be useful for parents to view with both their male and female children before they go away to college.

The Experience:

The documentary took 15 weeks to make. The first 7 weeks were spent researching, contacting and pre-interviewing subjects, selecting locations, scheduling shoots and finding original music. The last 8 weeks were spent shooting on-location, writing and editing. The crew worked closely with Security on Campus, Inc, (SOC) a non-profit organization located in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. SOC is dedicated to making college campuses safer. SOC located the two sexual assault victims and the man who is dedicating much of his life to educating young men on sexual assault.

The Premiere:

Breaking the Silence premiered in Rowan University's Bozorth Hall on May 15, 2002. Approximately 85 people attended. Almost all were college students. The feedback on the documentary was very positive.
