Student Press Law Center Survey Finds Most Colleges Not Disclosing Campus Court Results

Most colleges and universities recently surveyed by the Student Press Law Center did not disclose the final results from student disciplinary proceedings dealing with crimes of violence, something that federal law has permitted since 1998. The SPLC found that "less than 20 percent of colleges and universities surveyed... this summer would provide information about students who commit serious crimes on campus that are dealt with in disciplinary proceedings."

"These findings clearly demonstrate the need for a law that makes colleges turn over these campus crime records," said S. Daniel Carter the Vice President of Security On Campus. "Leaving disclosure at their discretion means that most schools simply aren't going to disclose this information."
